Matatabi sticks produce a similar euphoric response to catnip, but usually last twice as long. The sticks can be used for fun and as a teether.
If your cat doesn't react to catnip, be sure to try matatabi toys! They contain two substances considered cat stimulants:
Actinidin- a pyridine derivative also present in valerian, acts on the same receptors as nepetalactone (an ingredient of catnip).
Dihydroactinidiolide - a volatile terpene with a sweet smell (present, among others, in black tea and mango).
Remember to keep an eye on your pet when giving your cat a matatabi stick for the first time, as some cats react with excessive excitement - then just take the stick away and the cat will calm down after a while.
